Pro Coro Canada & Choir Camp Choral Concerts in Owen Sound This Week

Edmonton's Pro Coro Canada performs July 22 and Choir Camp's 100-voice mass choir closes the week July 24 — both Pay What You Can at St. Andrew's in Owen Sound.

Pro Coro Canada performs on July 22 and Choir Camp presents its end-of-week concert on July 24, both at 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 865 2nd Ave W. in Owen Sound. Admission is Pay What You Can.

At the July 22 concert, Pro Coro Canada from Edmonton will present a choral program entitled Once Upon a Time, taking the audience on a journey in song through myths and fairy tales from Hans Christian Andersen to contemporary adaptations, with Yeats and Albanian folk tales, and other enchanting poems and stories.

The performance will showcase the works of several prominent Edmonton composers including John Estacio, Laura Hawley, and Allan Gilliand, as well as the premiere of a new choral work by composer Stuart Beatch.

The July 24 concert will begin with Choir Camp’s small choirs. Lynn Janes and James Pinhorn will direct the Musical Theatre small choir, which will also divide up into a soprano/alto ensemble and a tenor/bass ensemble. Dr. Lorinda Van Wyk will direct the Global Music choir, who are learning folk songs from South Africa, Japan, and New Zealand. Matthew Allard will direct the Early Music choirs, featuring Renaissance and medieval repertoire.

The concert will end with five selections performed by our 100-voice mass choir, co-directed by Dr. Elaine Choi and Dr. Mark Ramsay.

Choir Camp is an annual summer choral event bringing together over 100 singers from across Ontario and Canada for five days of friendship, singing and learning. The camp has been held in Owen Sound for the last three summers, and this year Choir Camp will host camps in both Peterborough (July 13-17) and Owen Sound (July 20-24).
