Today, Canadians observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It’s a day to honour Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never came home, and acknowledge how the legacy of residential schools continues to shape our communities.

It is also known as Orange Shirt Day, inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad, who shared how her new orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school.

Here in Owen Sound, this is not just a day on the calendar. It’s lived. It’s present.

This year, the Binoojiinyag dadibaajimowag — Voices of the Children — ceremonial fire will be held at 10 a.m. at the Gichi-Name Wiikwedong Reconciliation Garden, located at the south end of Kelso Beach in Nawash Park.

The garden was designed as a contemplative space for precisely this purpose: to pause, reflect, and remember.

As our community gathers in reflection, how are you marking this day in your own life?

This day is a reminder, but it is only a beginning. Reconciliation grows through sustained action, ongoing learning, and everyday choices that foster respect, humility, and healthy relationships.
