👋 Welcome to The Owen Sound Current, your source for what’s happening in and around Owen Sound. Community-contributed content is open to free subscribers, while full subscribers get premium content, curated news, local events, and commenting features in these weekday briefs. Thank you for supporting independent local journalism!
The Owen Sound Current launched in November 2023 with a mission: to share what’s really going on in and around Owen Sound.
We said this had to be community-supported, as we couldn’t rely on the same advertising model that has failed in small-town newspapers across Canada.
Nine months later, over 1500 residents have subscribed by email.
We have between 2,500 and 6,000 reads each weekday, and when there are hot topics, wow—does this community ever show up!
We had over 16,000 reads the day we published a letter to the editor from a downtown business owner recently, for example.
This tells us that the Owen Sound Current is fulfilling a community need, and we want to know what we’re doing right so we can do more of it.
There are a number of ways you can support this independent local publication to help keep our community-based publication viable and sustainable:
Share articles. There are share buttons on each Owen Sound Current article, so you can share them on social media and via email.
Be part of the conversation. Full subscribers can comment on articles and share their experiences, thoughts, and perspectives with the community.
Write for us. We’re open to monthly column pitches from community members, particularly regarding sports, local culture, our environment, and local activities. Email owensoundcurrenteditor@gmail.com your pitch.
Submit a letter or photo. We want to share what’s happening with readers, and we cannot be everywhere at once!
Become a full subscriber, if you aren’t already. Doing so gives you access to all content in our weekday edition, including curated news and local events. It also unlocks our archives so you can read all of our content. Articles are archived two weeks after publication and only available to full subscribers.
Full subscribers - read on for news and updates, including Grey County’s plan to expand paramedic service and improve response times, a fatal accident on Highway 21 yesterday morning, and one Owen Sound woman’s big lotto win.
