Community gardens are usually filed under “nice to have”; as a place to grow tomatoes and meet the neighbours.

In this community contribution, Simona Freibergova, initiator of the Community Garden Network in Grey-Bruce, makes a bigger case: that these shared plots are climate infrastructure hiding in plain sight, quietly storing carbon, sheltering pollinators, shortening the distance our food travels, and knitting isolated people back together.

Her argument is that the most durable climate solutions may not be the largest ones. They might be the ones taking root down the street.
