Editorial | Who Has the Time to Volunteer?
Local organizations often struggle to find volunteers. So much of what happens in a community — events, clubs, programs, fundraisers — runs on donated time. And increasingly, it’s the same small group of people showing up again and again to keep things going.
It’s not a new problem, but it’s a growing one. Service clubs are getting smaller (and often, older). Long-running events rely on fewer hands. People are busy, burned out, or just unsure where to jump in.
At the same time, the way people volunteer is changing. Not everyone wants to join a committee or sit through monthly meetings.
But ask someone to help for a few hours with setting up an event, managing social media, taking photos, or helping with outreach, and they might be in.
For a lot of people, volunteering is less about a long-term commitment and more about getting involved in a way that feels social, rewarding, or a chance to learn something new. It can be a way to meet people, pick up skills, or just feel connected to something outside your usual routine.
I personally don’t believe that people care less now than they did before. But they’re exhausted, and that means community groups may need to rethink how they ask for help. The clearer you are about how easy, interesting, and beneficial it is to show up and contribute, the more likely people are to say yes.
So, a quick question for you…
