On the second Saturday of each month, visitors to the Owen Sound North Grey Union Public Library wander into the bustling Repair Café.
Some are there with items in need of repair; others just to “check it out” — perhaps enjoying a coffee, a cookie and a conversation.
Sometimes, that inspires them to inquire about volunteering as a fixer, host or barista in order to join in the positive energy that radiates as lamps, CD players, leaky stuffy and torn jeans are restored to working order and kept out of landfill.

In other cases, a simple repair of a household treasure motivates the treasure holder to ask how she or he can help!
The Repair Café, now in its third year, is a joint venture with the Georgian Bluffs Climate Action Team and the Owen Sound North Grey Union Public Library. It is a completely volunteer effort.
The theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week is “Ignite Volunteerism,” and Owen Sound’s Repair Café is on fire!
Thanks to its team of 52 volunteers, the Repair Café has fixed more than 600 items in its first 25 months of operation.
As the organizing committee (also volunteers) pauses to extend thanks to each and every person bringing their skills and commitment each month, we thank local sponsors Foodland Owen Sound and Ironwood Coffee for supporting the café side of the Repair Café. There’s nothing like a “cuppa” and a snack to pass the time while a zipper is replaced or a faulty toaster is deconstructed, diagnosed and repaired.
While current volunteers continue to look ahead to time at the Repair Café as their favourite day of the month, new volunteers are welcome — especially (but not limited to) anyone with experience with electronics.
Swing by anytime between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month (except August) to see how it works, meet some of the fixers, hosts and baristas.
If interested, alert one of the receptionists and the team will get you started on the onboarding process.
