OPP Warns of Rising Trailer Thefts Across Grey Bruce
Grey Bruce OPP reports a rise in trailer thefts across the region and urges residents to take preventative steps to protect their property.
The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is alerting the public to a noticeable increase in trailer thefts across the region in recent weeks. The thefts involve a variety of trailer types, including utility trailers, enclosed cargo trailers, and boat trailers.
According to police, trailers have been reported stolen from a range of locations, including private driveways, farm properties, and commercial lots—often during nighttime hours or when owners are away.
In response, the OPP is encouraging residents to take proactive steps to secure their property. Recommended prevention measures include:
Parking trailers in well-lit, secure areas not visible from the road
Using hitch locks and wheel locks to make towing more difficult
Removing tires or trailer hitches when not in use
Installing motion-sensor lights and surveillance cameras
Etching unique identifiers or serial numbers onto trailer frames
Keeping detailed records of the trailer’s VIN, license plate number, and photos
Police stress the importance of remaining vigilant, even in rural or low-traffic areas, and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.
Anyone with information related to recent trailer thefts is asked to contact Grey Bruce OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.cstip.ca.
The OPP continues to investigate and is reminding residents that simple security measures can be effective deterrents in protecting valuable property.
