The City of Owen Sound announced Tuesday it will plant an oak tree outside the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre to honour Sharif Rahman, a local restaurateur and YMCA board member who was fatally assaulted outside his business in the River District last year.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, October 26, at 2 p.m. at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Rahman was assaulted on August 17, 2023, after three men reportedly disputed their bill and assaulted him outside his restaurant, The Curry House. He succumbed to his injuries a week later, on August 24, sparking an investigation led by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS) that is now nearing 15 months in duration.

On August 15, 2024, police announced that arrests had been made over two weeks earlier. The Owen Sound Current has not been able to confirm how many people were arrested, the nature of any charges – or whether charges were laid at all.
