Given the crowds that gathered at the harbour this weekend to watch an icebreaker cut through the bay, it’s clear how deeply Owen Sounders feel connected to this waterfront; to its drama, its history, and its future.
That’s what makes this new Letter to the Editor from resident Sasha Fernando so timely. In response to a recent column in which Christy Hempel used a Lego model to reimagine the harbour, Fernando offers a thoughtful and grounded perspective on where waterfront planning should begin.
This is the kind of community conversation that matters. As the city weighs possibilities for the harbour’s future, it will take creative ideas, collaboration, realism, and respect for place and history — particularly Indigenous leadership and the ecological limits of Georgian Bay.
We invite readers to continue the conversation in that spirit, and with open minds.
We have plenty more local news and views for you below, including our special on the Owen Sound Police Services budget for 2026, in case you missed it over the weekend.
