Meaford’s 2026 Budget Approved with 3.35% Municipal Tax Increase
Meaford’s 2026 budget has been deemed adopted, marking the first full cycle under Ontario’s Strong Mayors legislation and including a 3.35% municipal tax increase and infrastructure investments.
The Municipality of Meaford’s 2026 budget was deemed adopted as of Feb. 6, 2026, marking the first full budget cycle under Ontario’s Strong Mayors legislation.
Under the legislation, the mayor submits the proposed budget directly to council. According to the municipality, the 2026 plan was developed by Mayor Ross Kentner in collaboration with municipal staff before being presented to council.
In a statement, Kentner said the process differed from previous years but maintained consistent goals.
“This year’s process has been unique, but our goals remain consistent,” Kentner said, adding that the budget “supports the growth we are experiencing, advances our commitment to sustainability, and continues to strengthen our infrastructure.”
The budget includes a 3.35 per cent municipal tax rate increase.
For a home assessed at $273,000 — the average residential assessment in Meaford, according to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) — the municipal portion of property taxes will increase by approximately $96 annually, or $8 per month.
The estimated blended tax rate increase, which includes both municipal and county portions, is 3.40 per cent. For the same assessed home value, that represents an increase of about $150 annually, or $12.50 per month.
MPAC has not conducted a province-wide reassessment since 2016. While $273,000 is used as a sample value, actual impacts will vary depending on individual property assessments.
The 2026 tax rate will be reflected on final tax bills issued in two instalments, in August and October. Residents with questions about property tax payments are encouraged to contact the municipality.
Among the projects and priorities in the 2026 budget:
$500,000 for harbour dredging, identified by the municipality as a key economic driver.
$200,000 from reserves toward the Downtown Harbourfront Master Plan.
Replacement of the ramp and stairs at Woodford Hall.
Advancement of the Lakeview Cemetery Fountains refurbishment project.
Delivery of the splash pad replacement project, with a reopening planned for summer.
Engineering work to begin for the Beautiful Joe Park pedestrian bridge.
Rehabilitation of the Bognor Park entrance.
Accessibility and recreation improvements at Leith Beach.
Rehabilitation, reconstruction and maintenance of roads and bridges across the municipality’s urban and rural network.
The municipality also plans to implement new financial software to expand online services and launch a new municipal website.
In addition, 2026 marks the 25th anniversary of amalgamation. The municipality plans to recognize the milestone with a series of pop-up events, a travelling exhibit and a short film premiere at Meaford Hall this fall.
The Municipality of Meaford built several public meetings into its 2026 budget process, including specific sessions on fees and charges and open budget review days.
According to the municipality, council, staff and residents contributed to shaping the 2026 budget through public meetings and written feedback.
