A 32-year-old man has died following a canoeing incident on Lake Huron near Howdenvale on Monday evening, marking the second drowning in Grey-Bruce in two days.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 6:00 p.m. on July 14, where three individuals had been canoeing when their vessel overturned. According to the Grey Bruce OPP, two of the canoeists were able to swim safely to shore, but a third did not immediately resurface.
Bystanders recovered the man from the water and attempted to administer CPR. Paramedics transported him to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Grey Bruce OPP thanked members of the public and emergency personnel who assisted at the scene.
This incident follows another drowning reported just one day earlier, on July 13, when a four-year-old child went missing while swimming in a pond on private property near Dundalk in Southgate Township. The child’s body was recovered the next morning by the OPP’s Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.
The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding the public to exercise caution when swimming or boating, especially during the busy summer season.
