The 2026 Grey County Heritage Certificate of Recognition recipient is anthologist Joan Beecroft whose compilations have significantly enriched the cultural, social and historical record of our local region.
Through her six thoughtfully curated anthologies, Joan has made a significant contribution to the preservation of the lived experiences of individuals and communities whose stories might otherwise have gone unrecorded. Her efforts are a vital contribution to Grey County’s collective memory, thus both promoting and preserving Grey County’s history.
These first-person accounts from 150+ local writers illuminate the everyday realities that shape a community: the unspoken norms, quiet acts of courage, shifting values, and deeply personal moments that together define an era. By inviting contributors to speak in their own words, Joan ensures that the heritage of Grey Bruce reflects a fuller spectrum of human experience.
While traditional histories often focus on dates, institutions, and major events, Joan’s anthologies remind us that the truest heartbeat of the past lies in the experiences of ordinary people. Personal stories convey truths that official records cannot - revealing how communities evolved, how identities were formed, and how lives were lived in the moments that rarely appear in textbooks.
In preserving these voices, Joan safeguards not only the memories but also the emotional landscapes, social realities, and cultural nuances of their time.
Congratulations, Joan!
