People of a Place: Exploring the Idea of Being Canadian in Grey-Bruce
Joan Beecroft's latest anthology, 'People of a Place: Exploring the Idea of Being Canadian in Grey-Bruce,' officially launches at 2:30pm on Saturday April 25 at The Library in Owen Sound.
The Ginger Press is pleased to announce the publication of its 157th book featuring local content.
Thirty-one Grey-Bruce writers responded to the Call for Submissions sent out by Joan Beecroft last fall for her latest book titled People of a Place: Exploring the Idea of Being Canadian in Grey-Bruce. Many of them will be in attendance to read from their essays at the book launch at 2:30pm on Saturday April 25 at The Library.
For People of a Place, Joan was inspired by comments made by Charlie Angus when he visited Owen Sound as part of his Resistance Tour: “My spiritual Canada comes right out of Tom Thomson,” he said. “That defiant Jack Pine facing down the wind blowing off the lakes.” Charlie agreed to write the Foreword to People of a Place, in which he says, “I encourage you to read these reflections on the power of place in Canada.”
This is Joan’s sixth anthology of themed essays which includes Growing Up Gay in Bruce & Grey, 20/20 Hindsight, A Place to Belong: Stories from Newcomers, Things that Used to Matter, and Aging in Place.
Stories from over 155 writers are included in these books; for many of the contributors this is the first time they’ve been published.
Established in 1978, The Ginger Press is one of Canada’s oldest independent bookshop+publishers. Located in the heart of downtown Owen Sound, the retail shop features all the Ginger Press titles as well as the finest selection in the universe of other new and experienced books about Grey-Bruce.
Owner Maryann Thomas is delighted to publish another community collection of local stories. As Alberto Manguel said many decades ago after visiting, “The Ginger Press brings voice to the community.”
Copies of People of a Place ($24.95) and Joan’s other books will be available for sale at the book launch, as well as instore and online at www.gingerpress.com.
Submitted by The Ginger Press. Full disclosure: The Ginger Press is the publish of OwenSoundCurrent.com.
