Wheel & Ride Safety Festival Draws Crowd to Downtown Owen Sound Under Cool, Sunny Skies
Kiwanis, the Optimist Clubs, OSPS and River District partners hosted the Wheel & Ride Safety Festival Saturday, with a refurbished bike giveaway.

The Wheel & Ride Safety Festival drew a strong turnout to the Owen Sound River District on Saturday morning, with cool temperatures and clear sunshine pulling families to a closed stretch of 8th Street East for bike safety activities, emergency vehicle tours, and a charity barbecue.
The free event was presented by the Owen Sound River District, the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound, the Optimist Club of Sydenham & District, the Owen Sound & District Junior Optimists, Scenic Cycle, and Owen Sound Police Service, each of which had a presence on site Saturday.
The event ran from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside Frog Ponds Cafe, with 8th Street East closed to vehicle traffic between 2nd and 3rd Avenue East from 8 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m.

Children moved through an obstacle course, lined up for a helmet fitting clinic, and brought bikes in for spring tune-ups. Those who arrived without a bike used pedal carts donated by Bayshore Country Feeds to complete the course and earn a Wheel & Ride Road Warrior ribbon.
The festival’s refurbished bike giveaway used a numbering system to manage distribution. Organizers say the Wheel & Ride Bike Program has now placed more than 200 refurbished bikes back into the community over the life of the program, targeting residents who might otherwise go without one.
Participants also climbed into fire trucks and met paramedics, firefighters, and police officers on site. Bruce–Grey–Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers and MP Alex Ruff each stopped by to meet attendees, and a charity BBQ began at 11 a.m. Bikes were also accepted by donation at the event for refurbishment and redistribution in future years.
The festival received the 2024 Festivals and Events Ontario Innovation Award and the 2025 Ontario BIA Association Special Events Award of Excellence. Updates on the program are posted on the Wheel & Ride Facebook page.
