This week, we’re launching Our Town, a series of columns by Owen Sound resident David McLeish, in which he examines how decisions made locally, provincially, and federally have shaped the community we live in today.
McLeish is asking questions many readers will recognize: Why are more people experiencing homelessness? Why does population growth appear to be stagnating? And why do some local policy decisions seem to run counter to evidence and long-term community interests?
Drawing on Statistics Canada data, government records, consulting reports, and local archives, the series traces possible connections between past choices and present outcomes — and makes a case for evidence-based decision-making over ideology, particularly heading into the next municipal election.
