Weds March 27: The Eclipse, WordShop, & Psychedelic Folk Are All on Our Radar
Plus: A reader writes in that "Owen Sound 2050 is worth it"
👋 Welcome to The Owen Sound Current, your source for what’s happening in and around Owen Sound. Community-contributed content is open to free subscribers, while full subscribers get premium content, curated news, local events, and commenting features in these weekday briefs. Thank you for supporting independent local journalism!
We’re still catching up from Monday evening, and ‘Owen Sound 2050’ was another item buried in the packed Council agenda.
The Strategic Planning Ad Hoc Committee recommended that Council approve hiring a consultant for up to $80,000, as the City does not have the resources or expertise to conduct effective community engagement for the 2050 Vision process in-house.
Pat Kelly thinks it’s money well spent, and explains why in this letter to the editor:
Full subscribers, there’s a lot more for you below, including…
Charges for two local men, each driving a vehicle in the Monday evening crash that closed 10th St W
A man caught and arrested with stolen iPads shortly after an Owen Sound cannabis store robbery
More information on the City’s plan to install surveillance cameras in various downtown Owen Sound locations
An interview with Rising Hedons, a psychedelic folk trio playing in Owen Sound this April
Details about a search warrant executed in Brockton and the $143,000 in stolen property recovered
Before we dive into those stories…
One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about this whole partnering-with-Ginger-Press-to-start-a-local-publication journey is the insight being editor has provided into all of the great (and even not-so-great) things happening in our community.
Curating local news and stories gives me a lot of hope for our future. There are people doing good and making things happen in myriad ways in Owen Sound and across Grey and Bruce, and those stories deserve to be told.
The thing is, we need more people to tell them. Every community needs curators, writers, and storytellers. How else will we document and preserve the experiences people are having in this community today to share with the Owen Sounders of tomorrow?
If you have any interest in writing and storytelling—whether it’s local history, family stories, memoirs, or even the next great novel (maybe set in Owen Sound?)—I hope you’ll join us at WordShop 2024.
It’s happening Sunday, April 7, at the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library, and it’s hosted by the Ginger Press (publisher of The Owen Sound Current).
Tickets are $95 per person, which gives you access to a great selection of talks from local authors and writers of all stripes, including yours truly.
Whether you’re an experienced writer already or just thinking about dipping your toe in the inkwell, it’ll be a great way to learn something new and connect with the local writing community. I hope WordShop inspires you to pitch an editor a new local column idea, too. 😉
Tickets are available now through the Library. See you there?
