Despite winter’s return on the first day of spring, planting season is just around the corner. Your gardening choices can have a tremendous impact on the health and biodiversity of the local ecosystem, writes Jennifer Deeks.

In her column this week, the master gardener calls on us to exercise our environmental conscience.

“Two points really hit home for me in terms of things that we do for no other reason than because we always have.

The first is the prevalence of manicured, monocultured, and ecologically dead turfgrass that occupies large portions of our landscapes. The second is our attachment to gardening using invasive and exotic plant species. 

Our notion of lawns originated in Europe, where aristocracy used them to show that they were so wealthy that they could afford to have unproductive land. Ditto for fancy plants imported from exotic places around the globe.”

I believe that it should be considered mandatory reading for anyone who gardens as well as anyone who has even a passing interest in the declining state of our natural world.
