Earlier this week, we asked readers to grade this term’s Council for the impact their decisions have had on public engagement and consultation. The results of that informal poll suggest many feel public engagement this term has fallen short.

With 76% of respondents grading council’s impact on engagement and consultation at a D or F, sentiment — at least among those who participated — points to significant dissatisfaction. Only 10% awarded an A or B; the remaining 13% gave them a C.

While informal and not at all statistically relevant, our polls offer a snapshot of the experiences some residents have had this term. Committee restructuring is one piece of that discussion, but public input also intersects with budget deliberations, major policy decisions, meeting formats and consultation timelines.

With 2026 being a municipal election year, the conversation inevitably turns toward accountability — and opportunity.

For those who believe local governance could be more accessible or responsive, there is another path: running for office.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) has released updated resources ahead of the 2026 municipal election, including its Lead Where You Live guide for prospective candidates, along with free workshops and information sessions for first-time, youth, Indigenous and underrepresented candidates.

If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to sit at the council table and make a difference, this is the year to find out.

Owen Sound Current is the city’s only independent, locally owned, ad-free news source — in your inbox five days a week.
