We kick things off today with the latest in the Our Town series, from David McLeish.
The City lists Owen Sound's average household income as $77,300 in informational and promotional materials. But averages hide as much as they reveal, McLeish says. In his latest column, he walks through the after-tax and median figures — and the widening income gap with Cobourg, Collingwood, Georgian Bluffs, and Ontario — to show what residents here actually earn.
Our Town: Owen Sound's Average Income Is $77,300. Most Residents Earn Far Less.
The Median After-Tax Household Income in Owen Sound is $57,600 — half make more, half make less. This value is $20,000 less than the figure reported by the City. If you were thinking of opening a business in the city, I suggest that this number would be more important to you than the Average Before-Tax Income.
