The Mayor of Owen Sound’s personal opinion of what it is or isn’t up for discussion became more impactful on Monday when Council approved an amendment to its Procedural Bylaw.
It was a decision that begs the question, why are we gathering input from community members at the Committee level when it doesn’t make it to Council?
Specifically, the amendment gives the Mayor and Committee Chairs the power to decide, in consultation with a member of City staff, which issues are “within the jurisdiction of Council/committee.”
Issues they do not feel are relevant can be kept off the agenda.
Judging by this exchange between Mayor Ian Boddy and Councilor Carol Merton, homelessness and housing are solidly on the chopping block.
