EDITORIAL
As the July 28 “Community Stakeholder Discussion to Foster a Vibrant River District” approaches, The Owen Sound Current has made the decision not to attend.
The City has placed restrictions on media participation, requiring journalists to attend “as community stakeholders” and to “honour any requests for confidentiality.” These preconditions are incompatible with our role as an independent news organization and our commitment to open, accountable reporting.

While we respect the City’s intention to host a facilitated discussion, we remain concerned that the event—originally requested by the Owen Sound Police Services Board to hear directly from downtown business owners about safety and open drug use—has been reframed into a broader, invite-only visioning session.
The City has confirmed it does not plan to record the meeting or provide a verbatim public record of attendees’ concerns.
Your voice matters. We urge attendees to help ensure public accountability and bring transparency to this process.
If you’re participating in the July 28 meeting, we strongly encourage you to share what was said, how the discussion was handled, and whether your concerns were heard. Submit a Letter to the Editor to make your experience part of the public record and help inform the wider community.
📬 Email letters to: editor@owensoundcurrent.ca
📌 Letters must include your full name and community.
