Owen Sound’s population has barely moved in more than 30 years, holding almost flat since 1991. Meanwhile, the townships ringing the city have grown, Georgian Bluffs by more than 100% over five decades.
In his latest Our Town column, David McLeish sets out to explain why, and what the legacy of past decisions still costs the city — a widening income gap with its neighbours, thousands of dwellings and their tax base built just outside city limits, and a population his own model projects will shrink in the decades ahead.
Our Town: Why Owen Sound Stopped Growing While Surrounding Townships Boomed
A comparison of population growth between Owen Sound and its surrounding townships (Georgian Bluffs, Chatsworth, and Meaford) yields some interesting trends. Starting in 1901, Owen Sound had a population of 8,776 and the 3 Townships totaled 23,298.
