Weds Jan 10: Owen Sound Art Banner Project at Risk; New 'Repair Cafe' Starting Up
Plus: What are your thoughts on aging in place? Local author seeks submissions for upcoming book.
There are things we tend to take for granted. And the longer a thing is just there, the less we tend to think about how it got there in the first place.
This week brought the realization that I’ve taken the Owen Sound Art Banners project for granted.
Banners appear each year along the inner harbour wall (and at the library, too). We wander and enjoy, pointing out an artist friend here or there and discovering new talent on our walks.
I’ve seen posts on Facebook soliciting art submissions and announcing winners, but have never given much thought to the project’s inner workings and what goes into making it happen.
It turns out the Art Banner project, like so many volunteer-driven efforts, is struggling. Without an injection of community support and energy, it may be coming to an end.
Project lead Stella Coultas shared the challenges her volunteer committee faces and what types of support they need to continue.
I cannot support the Art Banner project with my time, but have pledged to sponsor this initiative that both benefits downtown beautification and supports arts and culture.
Maybe you can, too. Maybe not – but either way, have a read and consider giving this one a share. Someone in your network may be able to help.

PS: ICYMI, don’t forget the River District Public Budget Meeting is happening TONIGHT. Downtown property owners pay an additional levy to the River District (formerly the DIA, now a department of the City). This is your opportunity to learn how it’s spent.
