Editorial: Thank You for Supporting Local Journalism That Puts Community First
As we head into February, we want to take a moment to thank you — our readers, subscribers, and contributors — for supporting Owen Sound Current and making it possible for us to do this work.
When we launched in November 2023, we made a commitment to providing timely, relevant, and independent local journalism that serves the public interest across Owen Sound and the wider Grey-Bruce region.
Since then, we’ve published more than 1,800 original and submitted community news articles, and shared 500 daily news briefs with our subscribers, curated every morning to bring you a clear picture of what’s happening in your community, over your first cup of coffee.
We’ve also published over 350 letters and community columns, creating space for dialogue, debate, and storytelling. Your voices are the heartbeat of local journalism. You’ve used them to speak out, share experiences, challenge decisions, and offer hope.
With your support, we’ve been able to report on issues that matter but often go uncovered, from using freedom of information requests to dig into the activities of BG Wealth Group, to tracking developments in the pursuit of justice for Sharif Rahman, including the extradition process that unfolded in Edinburgh.
Over the past several months, our subscriber community’s support has also enabled us to deepen our court and accountability reporting, add more features to our daily news brief, and expand our coverage area to include more stories from across Grey-Bruce.
These are stories that take time, care, and resources to pursue — and we’re doing more of them thanks to those who choose to subscribe and support us directly.
In a time when misinformation spreads quickly and trust in institutions can feel strained, the need for accurate, local, independent journalism has never been clearer.
Access to reliable information matters. Holding power to account matters. Feeling connected to your community matters.
If you’re already a subscriber, thank you. If you’ve written to us, thank you. If you’ve shared a story or offered a tip, thank you. And if you believe in the value of local news, we invite you to support and participate in this mission by subscribing, contributing, or simply continuing to read and share.
Here’s to continuing to build a stronger, better-informed community, together.
