Yesterday, we asked your opinion on the free pop-up campground along the harbour wall:
Forty-three percent (43%) of the 225 respondents as of Tuesday evening said salmon derby campers should pay for their stay. Twenty-five percent (25%) would like to see free harbourfront camping extended to Summerfolk visitors, though just 5% said free camping should be allowed all the time.
Less than a fifth of respondents (16%) said it’s just a few weeks and no big deal, and 10% don’t think camping should be allowed on the harbour wall at all.
So far, it looks like the majority welcome harbour campers during special events.
They would like to see it produce revenue for the town (or at least cover any related expenses such as policing and cleanup), or make it equitable by extending free camping to Summerfolk attendees, as well.
These are two socially and economically important tourism events for our city, each hosted by non-profits and powered by volunteers. Our family and many others we know near-religiously attend and support both.
Yet the differences between the experience on offer for Folkies – limited $50/night sites in the public campground with no picnic tables, high fees from the City for the festival camping space, and a fire ban – versus a few weeks of free camping anywhere you can wedge in a trailer…
Well, it’s a real head-scratcher. 🤔 I can’t make sense of it at all.
The poll is open until Wednesday night; you can still weigh in here.
