Who among us hasn’t dreamed of taking a Volkswagen camper across the country? John Tamming spotted this one near Wiarton this week. We hope they got back on the road soon after.

The City of Owen Sound’s decision to proceed to trial against a local nursing student over a cardboard box in a trash bin elicited a high volume and wide range of responses from readers. Outrage, disgust, anger, disbelief… your reactions — both online and as publisher Maryann and I have each heard directly — have run the gamut.

For Dave Taylor, the whole thing feels a lot like déjà vu.

“Fourteen years ago, I went through a very similar situation, and at the time could not believe something so stupid could happen,” Dave shared this week in a comment on our July 27 article, City of Owen Sound Elects to Send Student Nurse to Trial Over Amazon Box.

He faced $200 in fines because the city said he failed to put a $2.50 tag on a bag of garbage in front of his electronics store. Dave said the tag was there when he put it out. Even so, he says, “Owen Sound (using tax payers' money) took me to court and of course, the city lost.”

Thank you to Dave for sharing your experience with our community.

I have a few thoughts about this particular brand of history repeating itself:

Owen Sound Did This in 2012 While Its Leaders Watched. They're Doing It Again.

Owen Sound Did This in 2012 While Its Leaders Watched. They're Doing It Again.

A businessman over a $2.50 tag in 2012. A nursing student over a cardboard box in 2026. Same City, same courtroom reflex, same shrug from the top.
