Weds Apr 24: Six Months Into 'The Owen Sound Current'
Plus: Five people from around Grey and Bruce counties charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after a Kincardine traffic stop revealed drugs and weapons
👋 Welcome to The Owen Sound Current, your source for what’s happening in and around Owen Sound. Community-contributed content is open to free subscribers, while full subscribers get premium content, curated news, local events, and commenting features in these weekday briefs. Thank you for supporting independent local journalism!
The Owen Sound Current soft-launched and began publishing in October 2023 and officially launched on November 1. Looking back over six months as a weekday news source publishing five editions each week, we’re incredibly thankful for the community's support.
Without you, a local news venture of this kind simply would not be possible!
Advertising-driven corporate media consolidation, trends in social media and big tech, and the rising operating costs of print media have eroded local news sources across Canada. When Maryann Thomas and I began discussing plans for this publication, we knew that “business as usual” wasn’t the space for us.
We’re thrilled that The Owen Sound Current is today what we set out last year to create: the place to find out what’s really going on in and around Owen Sound.
Curating and archiving community news has been mission number one, and to that end, we’re proud to have published over 700 articles to date.
Amplifying community voices is also a foundational feature of The Owen Sound Current. Here, we’re grateful for the support of our Writers’ Fund Sponsors, who provide funding for non-news articles and columns about issues that matter to people in our community.
We thank our columnists, who share valuable perspectives and stories for the community’s benefit, as well as all who submit Letters to the Editor. These contributions are included in our weekday newsletters and archived in the Opinion section of the website.
And last but certainly not least, to our subscribers—without you, there wouldn’t be an Owen Sound Current.
Between 1,200 and 3,000 people open our email each day and read the articles inside.
And remember, you can share, too. As a small publication with no employees, we are exempt from big tech’s ban on Canadian news in social media. You CAN share Owen Sound Current articles with your friends and family on Facebook and Instagram.
It takes time, energy, dedication, and the community's support to keep local news sources open and sustainable. If you enjoy our free version, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription. Doing so gives you access to more content, including daily news briefs, events listings, and our full archives (which are open to free subscribers for two weeks after publication only).
Importantly, your subscription helps ensure the viability of The Owen Sound Current for months and years to come.
Thank you for joining us on this journey! We look forward to continuing to build and improve, and we welcome your suggestions at owensoundcurrenteditor@gmail.com.
