He’s a shantyman, Order of Canada recipient, mental health and recovery advocate, and co-founder of the iconic Canadian band Great Big Sea. And on May 24, Séan McCann returns to our area to play at the Historic Leith Church in a concert presented by Owen Sound’s Mudtown Records.

You might remember tapping your toes and singing along to Great Big Sea at kitchen parties and bars in the late 90s and early 00s. For me, GBS was a late-night, raucous bounce-around at The Harb, a friend’s place, or the bunkhouse on Griffith Island, where staff clinked bottles and blew off steam after work.

That was Great Big Sea’s vibe: Rollicking folk-rock guitar anthems infused with accordions, fiddles, and bodhráns. Infectious melodies, celebratory lyrics, and Celtic tradition punctuated by energetic pop and rock beats. A George Street party in every small-town Canadian kitchen.
