Twenty-plus years ago, the lights went out all over Ontario and the northern states. Indigenous author, Waubgeshig Rice was on the Rez, and after returning to the city a few days later, he thought, “I’d like to write a novel about that someday.” Well, years later, Waub has written not one, but TWO books inspired by one of the most widespread blackouts in history. First came Moon of the Crusted Snow, followed by Moon of the Turning Leaves, the sequel that author Alma Katsu declared is, “…the perfect dystopian read.”
And now, Mr. Rice is coming to Grey County to read from Moon of the Turning Leaves; discuss his approach to writing; engage the audience in a Q&A; and sign his latest novel; all for a fundraiser for the South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council (SGBYLC)!
This literary event will take place on Saturday, May 24th from 2-4pm at the Hanover Civic Theatre and is generously sponsored by Bruce Power. Retired Bruce nuclear operator and book enthusiast, Tracy Primeau, will be graciously hosting the conversation and Q&A with Waub.
Publishers Weekly said about Moon of the Turning Leaves that, “Rice puts a refreshing, Indigenous perspective on post-apocalyptic tropes…”; and the Toronto Star remarked that, “It’s a powerful, tour de force accomplishment that will leave readers hoping for a third book.”
Tickets for the event are $25 each and available through SGBYLC at info@sgbyouthliteracy.org or from local retailers: The Ginger Press in Owen Sound; Speaking Volumes Books in Markdale; Holst Office Supplies in Hanover & Walkerton; the Hanover Public Library; The Colour Jar in Durham; and The Williamsford Mill/Great Books in Willamsford. We also have a limited number of copies of Moon of the Turning Leaves for sale - courtesy of Penguin/Random House Canada – for $25/each, through SGBYLC.
