Two Owen Sound Drivers Charged & Cars Impounded Following Police Stops
Owen Sound Police charged two local drivers with impaired driving over the weekend in separate incidents that revealed open alcohol and, in one case, cannabis.
Two Owen Sound residents face impaired driving charges after being stopped by police in separate incidents on Friday and Saturday, with both found to be over the legal alcohol limit. One driver was also found with cannabis in the vehicle, resulting in additional charges.
The first incident took place on Friday, November 8, 2024, at approximately 8:20 p.m., when an Owen Sound Police officer observed a motorist texting while driving on 10th Street West.
During the subsequent traffic stop, the officer discovered an open can of beer and a small package of cannabis in the vehicle’s centre console. A roadside screening test indicated the driver was impaired, and further breath testing at Owen Sound Police Services confirmed his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit.
The 28-year-old man from Owen Sound was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with over 80 mg of alcohol in his blood. He also faces five other provincial offenses, including using a handheld device while driving, having open alcohol in the vehicle, and driving with cannabis readily available.
On Saturday, November 9, 2024, at approximately 8:56 p.m., a concerned motorist reported a vehicle driving erratically. The caller witnessed the vehicle making an unusually wide turn and traveling southbound on 3rd Avenue West in the northbound lane.
After the vehicle circled the same block several times, failing to stop at stop signs, Owen Sound Police stopped the car and conducted a roadside screening test.
The 59-year-old female driver failed the test, and subsequent breath testing at the station revealed her blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.
Both drivers received 90-day licence suspensions and had their vehicles impounded for seven days. Each driver is scheduled to appear in court later this month to address the impaired driving charges.
