The kids are heading back to school, and while fall often stretches itself well into October these days, you can feel it edging in already. Cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and those first goldenrods are all reminders of the season ahead.

In this week’s column, John Dickson shares what local naturalists have been up to — from tagging monarchs and banding birds to spotting peregrine falcons and tracking what looks like a bumper year for nuts and fruit.
