A reader submitted this photo of fishermen on thin ice off the Oxenden boat launch early Monday afternoon, just one day after a dramatic and undoubtedly costly aerial and marine rescue that saved 23 people from the frigid bay near Owen Sound. Conditions at the time this photo was taken: +14 degrees, 30km/h SSW winds gusting to 60 km/h.

Sunday’s dramatic ice rescue along the shoreline between Leith and Cobble Beach brought together firefighters, paramedics, police, aviation units, and marine crews from across the region.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured. But the scale of the response — and the conditions leading up to it — have prompted questions about responsibility when people venture onto the ice despite obvious warning signs.

In today’s editorial, Owen Sound Current looks at what happened, the public reaction since, and the broader question many residents are now asking: who should bear the cost when risky decisions trigger a major rescue?
