Alpha Street was blocked and residents evacuated on Monday, July 29, after a natural gas leak during the Alpha Street Reconstruction Project. The City of Owen Sound announced at 5:10 p.m. that line repairs had begun and evacuated residents had returned home. See more below. Photos submitted by Angela Smulders.

As the City of Owen Sound continues to limit the ways residents may be heard at Council, Maryann Thomas and I are looking for more ways to amplify community voices and perspectives. Community engagement is one of our top goals for The Owen Sound Current, so as a reminder:

Please keep to a reasonable length (500 words is a good guideline) and include your real name and the municipality you live in. We appreciate well-researched perspectives and lived experience, and will not publish anonymous or potentially libelous content.

• We welcome you to participate in community polls, and we're running one right now! See below. Do you have another question you’d like us to share with the community? Email me using the above address, and we’ll consider whether it’s a good fit.

• Full subscribers can comment on every article and participate in the conversation. Why do we limit this feature? First, we’re a small publication and feel our limited resources are better spent bringing you original content than moderating open comments. Second, we want to keep the level of discourse high and community-friendly. Unfortunately, open comments on news articles attract trolls and bot traffic, which takes time to manage and negatively impacts readers’ experience.

  And finally, we launched The Owen Sound Current knowing that traditional media business models are largely failing. We know that without community support, investment, and participation, our local news publication will not survive. So we’re willing to give back these additional features and capabilities to those who help make The Owen Sound Current possible!
