Welcome back, Readers.
Last summer, Cathy Hird could see signs of drought stress everywhere she looked. This year the land around her feels healthy: bountiful July rains, flowers blooming everywhere she walks, sunflowers that a bird or a squirrel planted for her and that she worked carefully around when digging the garlic.
That abundance comes with its own labour — lawns cut early in the morning, weeds pulled in short bursts, a dogwood quietly closing in on the neighbour's gate.
Cathy's column this month is about the work a generous season makes, and the peace underneath it:
Take the quiet where you can find it… the clock is running on the last real month of summer, and the calendar is packed.
Daniel Lanois plays Meaford Hall, cruise night hits High Street in Southampton, and an evening hike ends with tea at the leader’s house in Owen Sound. There’s tea on the train, tai chi in Wiarton, Sandfest at Sauble, and an antique car show at Grey Roots. And don’t forget Music in the Square in Hanover, a yoga hike at Lime Kiln Bluffs, and village markets in Shallow Lake and Tobermory, plus the Owen Sound Farmers’ Market, as always.
It’s all below in our upcoming event listings, and that’s just a taste of what’s happening this week.
Read on for events plus obituaries, weather, and local news stories from Northern Bruce Peninsula to Kincardine, from Saugeen Shores to Meaford and Thornbury — and everywhere in between.
