In Case You Missed It…
College support staff across Ontario walked off the job just after midnight, including about 465 workers at Georgian College. The union hasn’t broken that number down by campus, so we don’t yet know how many of those jobs are tied to Owen Sound versus Barrie or Georgian’s smaller sites in Collingwood, Muskoka, and Orangeville.
What we do know: the Owen Sound campus is open, classes are running, and picket lines may cause some delays at the entrances.
Support staff covers a lot of ground — from accessibility services to financial aid to library techs — so while teaching continues, there’s no question this will be felt by students.
The strike is provincewide and has no set end date. The union says job security is its central concern after thousands of job losses and hundreds of program cuts across the college system. The employer side says the demands would add more than $900 million in costs.
How long this lasts is anyone’s guess. Both sides say they want a deal, but they remain far apart. In the meantime, Owen Sound students are still in class, and staff are on the picket line.
