On Tuesday, we asked readers:
The vast majority of the 231 respondents, 94%, think it’s time for the City of Owen Sound to take action by cleaning up the Legate building and sending the owner the bill.
This suggestion kicked off a conversation in social media, where some questioned whether that’s even possible.
Good news!
Owen Sound has a property standards bylaw, which contains specific requirements for the exterior maintenance of buildings:
These bylaws spell out what happens when a property isn’t compliant:
They even tell us what happens if the property owner doesn’t follow the order to clean it up:
This shouldn’t require another citizen complaint. It doesn’t need a staff report. A meeting isn’t going to do anything. I mean, it’s right across from City Hall – surely they’re aware?
Systems and processes are already in place to fix problems like these. And if they’re working, we should see a substantial improvement pretty quickly.
Phew, that was easy! Can’t wait to see the updated photos.
If you want to be extra sure the City is aware of the deplorable condition of this prominent historic building, you can visit ‘How to Submit a Bylaw Complaint’ here.
