“One of the Rotary Clubs in Ottawa has been hosting almost 200 students age 16-18 from across Canada for over 50 years to a 4 day experience the end of May titled Adventures in Citizenship. We asked readers earlier this week what you would most like to see the City do about household garbage being left in public spaces, and the vast majority don’t agree with a more punitive approach.

We’ve seen that approach play out in several different ways, from warning stickers for fines on public garbage bins to “bylaw blitzes” targeting specific behaviour, and now targeting individuals based on their name potentially showing up on a label in a public bin.

As Dr. Phil would say of the City’s approach: “How’s that workin’ for ya?”

The people of Owen Sound are unlikely to stop producing waste. And with a steady stream of ongoing service cuts dressed up as “efficiencies” and “service review,” it’s become increasingly difficult and expensive for people — especially many who live in apartments, with no outdoor storage space — to get rid of their trash at all.

Of the 130 poll respondents, 57% want to see public trash bins empties more often. Another 22% want to see home pickup made cheaper and easier for residents.

Just 9% think an enforcement blitz is the next best step forward, and 2% support heavier fines.
