Owen Sound’s harbourfront reimagined: Christy Hempel’s model for the ‘Hope’ exhibition at Grey Roots.

We’ve been talking lately — and will keep talking — about Owen Sound’s potential. How are public spaces used? Who are they built for? And what makes a place truly feel alive?

Urban designer and columnist Christy Hempel returns this week with a hopeful, creative vision for what the harbour could become.

Inspired by real-world examples of transformed waterfronts, and illustrated through a playful Lego model created for Grey Roots’ “Hope” exhibit, Hempel’s piece is both imaginative and rooted in possibility.

From pop-up markets to floating walkways, from industrial reuse to phytoremediation — it’s not a blueprint, but an invitation to imagine what’s possible here, and what kind of city we want to become.
