Heritage Week offers a chance to reflect on the stories that shaped Owen Sound — from its marine roots to its rail history — and the place where many of those stories are preserved: the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre.

Also known as the Marine and Rail Museum, the waterfront institution operates as a true community museum, supported by volunteers, donors, and local residents who believe the city’s history matters.

In a message marking Heritage Week, the museum’s board chair highlights the behind-the-scenes work underway to strengthen governance, streamline operations, and support volunteers — and makes a direct appeal for community involvement.

From greeting visitors and maintaining artifacts to serving on committees or making a donation, there are multiple ways for residents to support the museum’s work. As the message makes clear: heritage does not preserve itself.
