Today's top story is a warning from Grey Bruce Public Health after an American crow submitted to the Canadian Wildlife Health Co-operative for testing tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) earlier this month.
This is the first bird to test positive for WNV in Grey-Bruce in 2024. As of Aug. 17, six Ontario residents have tested positive for WNV – none of those in Grey or Bruce counties.
Most people with WNV experience no symptoms. However, those over 50, immunocompromised, or with chronic health conditions are at risk for serious health effects.
While the risk to humans of acquiring the virus in Grey-Bruce remains low, the health unit says this serves as a reminder of the importance of preventing mosquito bites.
