Owen Sound property owners pay more of their income in property tax than residents of any of the 27 Ontario municipalities David McLeish looked at.

That’s the finding at the centre of the final column in Our Town, McLeish’s limited series. He puts Owen Sound second lowest of the group for median after-tax household income, at $57,600, and fifth highest for property taxes on a detached bungalow.

Combine the two and, by his calculation, a household at or below the median here spends about 7% of its disposable income on property tax — roughly double Kincardine’s share.

McLeish also breaks down where the money goes, and draws on Jim Hutton’s analysis of City spending in setting out what he thinks council should change.
