Three Dirt Bike Riders Charged After Reckless-Riding Complaint Near Proton Station
Officers tracked three dirt bikes from a Proton Station complaint into Mono, where OPP stopped them and laid careless driving and off-road vehicle charges.
Provincial police have charged three dirt bike riders after a complaint about reckless riding near Proton Station led officers to track them across regional lines and stop them in Mono, in Dufferin County.
Grey Bruce OPP received a report at about 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, that three dirt bike operators were riding recklessly in Proton Station, in Grey County’s Southgate Township, the OPP said in a news release. A responding officer saw the riders operating dangerously — including running stop signs and passing pedestrians on local trails at high speed — according to police.
The riders then crossed from the OPP’s West Region into its Central Region, the release says. Central Region officers with the Snow Vehicle, All-Terrain Vehicle and Vessel Enforcement/Education (SAVE) unit, who were already running enforcement on a Mono trail system, stopped the three for inspection and later linked them to the Proton Station complaint, police say.
The Grey Bruce OPP officer charged all three with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. SAVE officers laid five more charges against each rider, according to the OPP: operating an off-road vehicle without insurance, without a permit and without licence plates; failing to register an off-road vehicle after becoming its new owner; and taking part in a prohibited activity on the premises by riding without a valid trail pass. One rider also faces a charge of failing to properly secure a helmet chin strap.
Police did not release the riders’ names, ages or home communities. The charges have not been tested in court.
