Three Accused in Sharif Rahman Homicide Case Returned to Owen Sound After Extradition from Scotland
Over two years after Sharif Rahman was fatally assaulted outside his restaurant, three men have been extradited from Scotland to face charges in Owen Sound. They are in custody and due in court Dec 12

More than two years after local restaurateur Sharif Rahman was fatally assaulted outside his downtown Owen Sound business, three men accused in his death have been returned to Canada to face charges.
Robert Evans Jr., 24, his father Robert Busby Evans, 47, and uncle Barry Evans, 54, (ages at time of arrest) were extradited from Scotland on Thursday, December 11, 2025. They are now in custody in Ontario and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on Friday, December 12.
Rahman, 44, was assaulted on August 17, 2023, on 2nd Avenue East following what police described at the time as a violent altercation. He died a week later in hospital from critical head injuries.
The attack shocked the Owen Sound community and prompted an extensive police investigation, which soon turned international when the suspects fled the country.
Authorities tracked the men to Scotland, where Police Scotland arrested Robert Evans Jr. and Robert Busby Evans in Edinburgh in July 2024, and Barry Evans in Dalkeith in October 2024.
All three have remained in custody overseas since their arrests and formally consented to extradition during a court hearing in Edinburgh in October 2025.
Police Confirm Return, Offer Few New Details
A joint statement issued Thursday by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Owen Sound Police Service (OSPS) confirmed the extradition had been completed.
The transfer was coordinated with multiple international agencies, including the UK’s National Extradition Unit and INTERPOL. Police thanked the public for its patience but declined to release further details, citing the ongoing court process.
The police statement did not specify the charges the men are facing. However, court records previously reviewed by Owen Sound Current confirm that Robert Evans Jr. is charged with manslaughter, while Robert Busby Evans and Barry Evans are charged with accessory after the fact to manslaughter.
While police framed the extradition as a milestone in a complex investigation, key details remain unaddressed.
The official update omits any reference to the events of August 17, 2023, when the three men and a fourth individual allegedly dined at The Curry House, owned by Rahman. According to prior reporting, a dispute over an unpaid bill escalated into a physical confrontation outside the restaurant.
Witnesses and surveillance footage reportedly indicate Rahman was punched and fell to the pavement, suffering a severe head injury. He was transferred to a trauma centre in London, but never recovered.
All three men formally waived their right to fight extradition in an Edinburgh court on October 20, 2025, after several months of preliminary hearings.
At that time, a letter from Canadian officials was read into the record, offering an assurance that any time served in Scottish custody would be recommended for deduction from their Canadian sentences if convicted — though this was not a guarantee.
The assurances on prison conditions in Canada previously requested were taken off the table, as the men’s consent rendered them legally irrelevant under UK law.
The homicide and the drawn-out search for those responsible have left lasting scars in Owen Sound. Rahman’s death sparked widespread grief and calls for justice.
A well-known and respected member of the community, Rahman was remembered as a kind, generous family man, community volunteer, and restaurateur.
Police acknowledged the emotional toll in their Thursday statement, noting the “impact this investigation has had on the victim’s family and the local community.” Still, some community members have expressed frustration at the length of the process and the limited transparency surrounding the investigation.
The three accused will make their first court appearance in Owen Sound on Friday, December 12, 2025. No trial date has yet been set.
Owen Sound Current will continue to report as new information becomes available.
