A community reflection on volunteering in Owen Sound, exploring how getting involved builds connections, strengthens community, and creates a sense of belonging — by Sandy Stevenson.
Neighbourwoods North is an awesome community project powered by dedicated volunteers. Thanks Sandy for highlighting it. I would go on to say that the visible results of volunteering is so strong in Owen Sound and much of the strength of our community comes from their dedication and support.
I personally think of sports for kids and Clubs for kids. Outstanding and of note is the Y. I also note the work of Faith groups in creating services for the most vulnerable: O’Share, St Francis and St Clare Place which provide deeply affordable housing for Seniors. Faith groups work with CMHA to provide programs and support for Community Gardens and other housing supports for those with mental illness. We have Safe and Sound to support the unhoused and those addicted. There are so many more that should be mentioned, like the Alzheimers Association, and they all function with some level of volunteer support.

Volunteers do the day to day work of keeping these projects alive and our provide for our most vulnerable neighbours . Never underestimate the power of volunteering.
