Solidarity Sundays Returns to Harmony Centre for a Third Season
Solidarity Sundays returns Oct. 19 to the Harmony Centre, 10:30 a.m.–noon weekly, with potluck snacks, music, games, and an accessible, by-donation space.
Solidarity Sundays — a weekly community social — is back at the Harmony Centre for its third season starting Sunday, October 19. The volunteer-run gathering opens the lower hall from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Sunday through the spring.
Entry is by donation, coffee and tea are provided, and attendees bring potluck snacks to share. The room has a wheelchair ramp and is fully accessible.
Launched in January 2024, the event was created to offer a flexible, low-barrier place for neighbours to connect outside of formal organizations, clubs, or private homes.
The format is deliberately casual: people play board games, make crafts, read stories, and play music. Local musicians often jam or lead a sing-along while others play table tennis and bean bag toss. Much of the time is simply spent chatting and getting to know one another across ages.
“Being in solidarity means getting to give and receive mutual support and care in the face of adversity. We see getting together to share space, conversation and music as an act of care in today’s world,” said Simon Jo-Keeling, one of the rotating weekly hosts.
“Who are we in solidarity with? The most vulnerable, to be sure, but ultimately anyone who needs a little more inclusion, kindness, help or conversation. Solidarity Sundays offer a garden bed where seeds of connection can be planted and tended.”
Last season, Food Not Bombs joined the Sunday gatherings, using the kitchen to prepare meals available by donation on site and then distributing food for free in the community and at Safe ‘n Sound on the day each week when OSHARE is closed.
Owen Sound Food Not Bombs describes itself as an autonomous collective working to reduce food waste, build community, and reduce hunger. Anyone is welcome to help cook from 10 a.m. in the basement kitchen; the group also welcomes donations and clean containers for distribution.
