Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a person was bitten by a police dog during an arrest in Meaford early Thursday morning.
Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say officers were first called to a disturbance at a residence around 10:45 p.m. on March 18. One individual fled the scene, according to police.
Police say the person was located several hours later, shortly before 2 a.m., by the OPP Canine Unit. During the arrest, the individual was bitten by a police service dog and taken to hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The SIU has invoked its mandate, which is triggered when police interactions result in serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault.
With the SIU now investigating, the OPP say they will not release further information.
As of publication, police have not disclosed the identity, age, or gender of the individual, the nature of the original disturbance call, the exact location of the incident, or details about what led to the use of the police dog during the arrest.
The SIU is responsible for investigating the actions of police in such cases and will determine whether there are reasonable grounds to lay charges.
