Sheatre celebrates its 40th anniversary on November 15. The company invites the public to join the party at Grey Roots Museum & Archives as it reflects on some bright, groundbreaking moments over its 40 years.
Sheatre’s celebration features these moments in a show featuring Sheatre’s community and professional artists, including Larry Jensen, Kit Boulter, Deanne Hallman, Tyler Wagler, Keira McArthur and david sereda, with some tales told by Joan Chandler and past project participants.
It will highlight such productions as “The Ballad of Kennedy’s”, “TOM, the musical”, “Far From the Heart/Loin du Coeur”, “Miishoo miinwaa Noki ~ You, Me and Wrinkles”, “Pterodactyl Delight” and more.
Did you know that Sheatre helped to change an Ontario law? That it influenced the creation of a new theatre method now practiced globally? That the small theatre company from Georgian Bluffs has inspired over 230,000 people to stop, think, and take action, and to revel in community here at home, nationally and internationally?
It all started in a rural farmhouse.
Sheatre began when a small group of women in Huron County wanted to use theatre and the arts to make positive change — and have fun. We’re still doing both, 40 years on.
Sheatre has continued to dive into issues of interest and concern, and celebrated the people and stories of diverse communities. Some of these explorations have been tough, touching things that no one wanted to talk about.
But no matter how sensitive the issue, people came together to make plays, songs, stories, and art from their experiences – because they had something important to say.
Sheatre has launched 1454 community-engaged workshops and productions since 1985.
Come, hear the story, and celebrate. Doors open at 12:30 on Saturday, November 15, at Grey Roots Museum & Archives, 102599 Grey Road 18, Owen Sound. The event starts at 1:00 pm with opening remarks in the Atrium, followed by a Special Performance, reunions, and Cake!
Seating is limited. Admission is $40 (for 40 years) or pay-what-you-can. $40 tickets can be purchased online through Zeffy Sheatre 40th Celebration. To reserve pay-what-you-can tickets, email engage@sheatre.com. Admission is also available at the door.
