Save Georgian Bay Hosts Virtual Polar Bear Dip in 2026 to Oppose Meaford Energy Project
Grassroots group’s 2026 Polar Bear Dip goes fully virtual, encouraging participants to take the plunge locally and raise funds to oppose TC Energy’s proposed pumped storage project in Meaford.

Environmental advocacy group Save Georgian Bay is once again organizing its annual Polar Bear Dip, which will take place virtually in 2026.
Participants are invited to register online, take a cold-weather plunge at a location of their choice, and share photos or videos as part of the group’s ongoing opposition to a proposed energy storage project in Meaford.
This year’s event will not include an in-person gathering. Instead, Save Georgian Bay is encouraging participants to make the experience a local celebration by dipping with friends or family between January 1 and February 28, 2026.
Funds raised through the event will support the group’s campaign to stop TC Energy’s proposed pumped storage project on the Georgian Bay shoreline at the Canadian Forces Base Meaford.
The group argues the project poses environmental risks to the Niagara Escarpment and the freshwater ecosystem of Georgian Bay.

About the Project
TC Energy’s open-loop pumped storage project would draw water from Georgian Bay to a man-made reservoir located on the escarpment above. Save Georgian Bay says the project threatens water quality, local habitats, and the surrounding landscape.
The plan has been twice rejected by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), but it continues to receive financial and political support from the provincial government. The advocacy group has been campaigning against the project since it was first proposed.
Safety and Participation Guidelines
Save Georgian Bay encourages participants to dip safely, never alone, and without the influence of alcohol or intoxicants. Costumes and creativity are welcome, but safety remains the priority. Children under 18 may participate with parental consent and supervision.
