Rain and Snowmelt Prompt Water Safety Warning Across Saugeen Watershed
Saugeen Conservation issues Water Safety Statement for December 28–31, warning of rising water levels and hazardous conditions due to rain and melting snow.
The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has issued a warning via its Water Safety Statement, effective through Wednesday, December 31, as unseasonably warm temperatures and rainfall are expected to raise water levels and potentially create hazardous conditions across the watershed.
A low-pressure system is forecast to bring 15 to 30 mm of rain to the region beginning Sunday, December 28. Daytime highs of 5 to 6°C are also expected to trigger significant snowmelt, with the combination of rain and meltwater increasing runoff and localized flooding in small watercourses.
While widespread flooding is not anticipated, the SVCA warns that frozen or near-frozen ground will limit water absorption, potentially leading to overbank flooding in low-lying areas.
The following municipalities are included in the advisory:
Arran-Elderslie
Brockton
Chatsworth
Grey Highlands
Hanover
Howick
Morris-Turnberry
South Bruce
Huron-Kinloss
Kincardine
Minto
Wellington North
Saugeen Shores
Southgate
West Grey
Public Safety Advisory
Residents are urged to exercise extreme caution around all rivers, streams, and waterbodies, as high water levels, fast-flowing currents, and weakened ice present serious safety risks. Slippery banks and changing conditions make even familiar locations dangerous.
The SVCA reminds the public to stay away from bridges, culverts, dams, and any ice-covered water in the region, as these areas are considered unsafe at this time.
Monitoring and Reporting
Conservation staff are actively monitoring watershed conditions and will issue updates if necessary. The current statement remains in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, unless conditions change.
