Prohibited Driver Facing Multiple Charges After Walkerton Traffic Stop
A 35-year-old West Grey man faces multiple charges after a traffic stop in Walkerton revealed a driving prohibition and unauthorized licence plate.
A 35-year-old West Grey resident is facing a long list of charges after a traffic stop in Walkerton led to a police investigation involving a prohibited driver, unauthorized licence plates, and multiple provincial and federal offences.
According to the South Bruce OPP, the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on January 15, when an officer on general patrol received an alert from the Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system while observing a vehicle on May Street. The system flagged a possible issue with the licence plate.
Upon stopping the vehicle, police say they discovered that the licence plate was not authorized for use on the vehicle, and that the driver was under a court-ordered driving prohibition.
The driver, identified as Curtis Whitten, 35, of West Grey, was taken into custody and the vehicle was impounded for 90 days.
Whitten now faces a lengthy list of charges:
Operation while prohibited
Failure to comply with a release order
Possession of a Schedule II substance
Use of unauthorized plate
Two counts of driving while under suspension
Operating a motor vehicle without insurance
Possession of unmarked cigarettes
Care or control of a vehicle with cannabis readily available
Whitten was held for a bail hearing on January 16 and has since been released from custody, with a future court date scheduled at the Walkerton Ontario Court of Justice.
